Value of Visual Art in My Life Visual Art in my life is a key component to who I am. It makes up nearly all of my hobbies from drawing to photography and it’s what I plan to do to make a living. Creating art has been something I have enjoyed for a long time and will for many more years, no matter what medium I choose to use. Not only do I like creating works of art but I also enjoy looking at them and appreciating the details that make the work what it is. My favorite subject matter is automobiles. I see cars as more than something that can get me from one point to another but as a work of art and there is always something that I find intriguing about their designs. Automobiles are functional forms that have been designed to be aesthetically pleasing and to reflect our culture.
Influences The main influence in all my work is automobiles, a subject that was introduced to me at a very early age. I have gone to many car shows to see these rolling works of art in person and I have been very passionate and somewhat obsessive about automobiles ever since then. Interestingly enough, I probably wouldn’t be interested in art had I not been introduced to cars, I can’t ever really remember drawing anything but cars. The automobile has been something I have greatly admired, and through watching an artist like Chip Foose design and restore cars on T.V I learned what I wanted to do very quickly: design cars. Although I do intend to design cars, I have also been introduced to photography by my sister which I greatly enjoy as a hobby. Throughout my Art History class I have seen elements in some architecture as well as some sculptures that I will incorporate into some of my car designs, which as been quite interesting.
Artistic Experiences From a very early age I remember doing simple line drawings of race cars and it really wasn’t until eighth grade that I was really introduced with the idea of becoming an artist. Since then I have been lucky enough to take many classes related to art, using various different mediums. One of my favorite mediums I work with is photography. I combined my passion for cars and photography, resulting in me taking over 5,000 pictures of cars in a three year time period. My goal with every picture I take is to show automobiles from a completely different perspective then I would see them in my everyday life and at times, I go to great lengths to do that. I have also been doing much more painting this year and I have enjoyed the challenge of learning a new medium to work with This year I have also been studying Art History and quite enjoy learning about artwork, gaining a lot of knowledge in the process. I have been fascinated by some of the references that some automobiles make to works of art. For example the Rolls-Royce use of the Greek god Nike to suggest their brand is victorious.
